Movers & shakers: Sept. 11, 2009 (The Magazine

Guggenheim Partners LLC said Peter Comisar joined Guggenheim Securities as vice chairman and head of West Coast investment banking, based in Los Angeles. Comisar arrived from Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he spent 20 years. He was a partner managing director in investment banking and was responsible for consumer and retail sector investment banking activities on the West Coast. Comisar spent a decade in New York as a member of the corporate finance, capital markets and mergers and acquisitions groups, relocating to Los Angeles in 1999. In 2006, he advised retailer Albertson's Inc. on its $17.4 billion sale to SuperValu Inc., CVS Corp. and Cerberus Capital Management LP.

Comisar is one of several recent high-profile hires made by Alan Schwartz (pictured), executive chairman of Guggenheim. Schwartz, a 32-year veteran and former CEO of Bear Stearns Cos., joined Guggenheim in June.

Just after Schwartz's arrival, Kenneth Savio, former co-head of trading and sales at Bear Stearns, joined to build an equity trading desk at Guggenheim. Former Bear bankers Frank McCutchan and Scott Schondau came aboard as the firm launched a financial institutions group. Other Bear alumni, according to The Wall Street Journal, include Andrew Decker, Eric Rutkowski and Hans Toro.
