Movers & shakers: Sept. 17, 2009

Macquarie Group Ltd. hired Kalpana Desai as deputy head of Asia for Macquarie Capital Advisors. She reports to Andrew Low, head of Asia. Earlier this year, Desai left Bank of America Corp., where she was head of Asia-Pacific mergers and acquisitions. Desai previously spent 11 years with Merrill Lynch & Co.


RichardParsonsMovers.pngCitigroup Inc. chairman Richard Parsons took on a senior advisory role at Providence Equity Partners Inc. Parsons' Citi chairmanship will remain his primary business activity. He is also a director of Estée Lauder Cos.

In 1995, Parsons joined Time Warner Inc. as president, and was CEO from 2002 to 2007. He was chairman of its board from 2003 to 2008. Before Time Warner, he was chairman and CEO of Dime Bancorp Inc. and a managing partner of the New York law firm Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler LLP. Parsons was also counsel for New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and senior White House aide under President Gerald Ford.


In New York, Rothschild hired Lawrence Portman as a managing director and head of consumer products for the Americas. He was head of Citigroup Inc.'s North American food and beverage practice. Previously, Portman was head of European consumer products at Morgan Stanley.

Portman will join Michael Gottschalk, head of North American consumer products, on the executive committee of the global cooperation established in 2008 between Rothschild and Rabobank to pursue M&A and equity capital markets advisory in the food, drink and agricultural sectors.
