Movers & shakers: Oct. 5, 2009 (The Magazine

New York buyout firm Apollo Management LP, run by Leon Black, hired former Northern Rock plc CEO Adam Applegarth (pictured) as a senior adviser to its European fund. Applegarth, blamed for excessive lending of ill-fated mortgage, left Northern Rock in December 2007, about two months before it was nationalized. Applegarth is expected to use his Northern Rock experience to invest in those same bad loans.

UBS Securities Canada vice chairman Jim Kofman will leave at the end of October. Kofman has been with UBS for 13 years. He worked on the $17 billion Reuters Group plc-Thomson Corp. merger.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc announced that Philip Scott and Penny Hughes will become nonexecutive directors on Nov. 1 and Jan. 1, respectively. Scott will be chairman of a new risk committee and Hughes will be a member of the remuneration committee and eventually become chairman of the committee. Scott is group finance director at Aviva plc. Hughes spent the majority of her executive career at Coca-Cola Co.

Since October 2008, 13 board members have left and eight appointments have been made.
