Faced with a mass exodus of some of its top employees and a mob of angry shareholders, Yahoo! Inc. is set to announce a major reorganization this week that it hopes will provide more clarity for the company's future.
A source close to Yahoo! confirmed a restructuring has been in the works for a couple of months and is expected to be announced soon. While further details of the plan were not available, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Yahoo! will centralize numerous product groups such as its mail, search and home-page divisions into a more global product organization.
Yahoo! president Susan Decker--not CEO Jerry Yang--is leading the reorg, which has led to speculation that the company's chief may be bowing to pressure to take a lesser role in the operations of the company one year after he replaced Terry Semel as its CEO. As its president, however, Decker oversees Yahoo!'s various divisions, so it is not unusual that she would be the point person for such a project.
The news comes amid a flurry of departures at Yahoo! that are both a result of the new corporate structure and due to the state of flux the company finds itself in in the wake of its decision to rebuff Microsoft Corp.'s acquisition offers. Some employees who are unsatisfied in different roles are leaving ahead of the pending announcement, while others seek a more stable situation.
