Bell Labs and America's technology revolution

Published June 20, 2012 at 9:33 AM

"Bell Labs didn't make consumer innovations; they made what would be called platform innovations, so the infrastructure of really our data and communications and industries and infrastructure all go back to what was made here," says Jon Gertner, author of "The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age on American Innovation," in this video interview with The Deal Pipeline's editor in chief Robert Teitelman. Gertner outlines the powerful effect that technologies created at Bell Labs have made on the innovations we enjoy today, including semiconductors, transistors, communications satellites and cellphones. Teitelman and Gertner go on to discuss benefits and possible limitations of today's Silicon Valley model of innovation. - George White
