Patents drive Google's Motorola buyout

Published August 23, 2011 at 4:00 AM

"The value of patents is being looked at quite differently after the Nortel auction," says Marilyn Sobel, a partner at the corporate department of law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. In this video interview with The Deal Pipeline, Sobel discusses how  Apple Inc. and Rockstar Bidco LP's winning of Nortel Networks Inc.'s patent auction -- in which Google Inc. had made a $900 million stalking-horse bid -- evolved the patent market playing field and helped pave the way for the search giant's largest transaction to date, the $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. - Sarah Hashim-Waris
