Behind the Buyouts: Jefferies' Chu on Spectrum Strategy

|
Published: November 17th, 2025
Jefferies vice chairman Lawrence Chu discusses the $23 billion AT&T-EchoStar spectrum deal and the strategic landscape for wireless, fiber and AI infrastructure.

Jefferies Financial Group Inc. vice chairman Lawrence Chu joined The Deal’s Behind the Buyouts podcast to discuss AT&T Inc.’s (T) landmark $23 billion purchase of wireless licenses from EchoStar Corp. (SATS) and the landscape of wireless spectrum holders and potential deals.

As AT&T, Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and T-Mobile Inc. (TMUS) fine tune their wireless portfolios, a range of public and private equity-backed groups hold licenses that could tempt the Big 3 carriers.

Chu outlined how regulatory initiatives under FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr have shaped spectrum policy and private market activity, as well as his role in an innovative spectrum auction that repurposed TV licenses for wireless carriers. He also pointed to growing convergence between wireless and fiber networks, noting that integration improves customer retention and network efficiency.

The banker discussed the industry outlook as major carriers and private equity-backed portfolio holders conduct spectrum swaps and acquisitions while the artifical intelligence-era communications backbone takes shape.
