IT Channel Partners Reflect Sponsor Interest

Competitive auctions by Avant and BridgePointe indicate demand for companies that help clients navigate critical IT purchases.

Recent growth investments in technology services distributors Bridgepointe Technologies Inc. and Avant LLC indicate demand for companies that help clients navigate critical IT purchases, discussions at the April Channel Partners conference in Las Vegas indicate.

“There’s a lot more investor interest than people outside may have realized,” Will Goodman of Moelis & Co. LLC said during a panel. “Both of those were competitive processes.”

In both deals, existing investors continue to be significant investors. Pamlico Capital Management LP remained at Avant alongside investment from Court Square Capital Partners LP, while existing backer Charlesbank Capital Partners LLC took part in BridgePointe’s fundraising with Carlyle AlpInvest.

“That shows that people who know the most have continued confidence in the underlying business, in the underlying space,” said Goodman, who advised Charlesbank and BridgePointe.

The ecosystem of IT partners, technology advisers, value-added resellers, consultants, managed services providers and related offerings has attracted funding from a range of middle market sponsors. The opportunity is massive. Channel Partners’ Robert DeMarzo suggested the sector will help arrange the majority of $6.1 trillion in 2026 information technology sales.

Tiering Up

Columbia Capital partner Evan DeCorte discussed various tiers of potential portfolio companies.

At the bottom are those with one to five employees. “They’re a great sales organization that’s built up a nice client base,” DeCorte said.

The overriding question is whether the business could continue without the founder.

“If it needs that owner, which it likely would, if it’s that size, then you’ve got to have a structure that keeps that person engaged and excited for quite a long time,” he said.
